Use Cat 5 Wire for Power on Security Cameras

Category 5 Category 5 enhanced cables and wires are 24 AWG standard copper or American wire gauge wires. They can carry current to devices that require low voltage power. When used to feed CAT-5e security cameras, two things must be taken into consideration voltage drop, which depends on the distance between the power supply and the device, and wire resistance.

POE or Power Over Ethernet, now used to provide power over CAT-5 also cables. It can provide up to 15.4 watts of power. normal security cameras use 9 to 12 volts to operate.

Run CAT-5 cable form monitoring location to security camera location. distance is very important, if more than 500 feet of wire is needed between camera and DVR, active UTP unshielded twisted pair baluns are needed. For every 100 feet of wire needed, there will be 0.5 drop in voltage.

Calculate wire length carefully. Most new CAT-5 cables have length of wire printed on outer sheath. CAT-5 cables used with cameras and baluns can go up to 3,000 feet without problems.

Strip about 1 or 2 inch of sheath from wire to locate rip cord, then pull it back 3 to 5 inches along cable length. Separate four pairs of wires inside cable, then cut plastic separator in middle. Cut off outer protection as well and rip cord.

Choose wire color that will be used for video. Separate wire pair in two. first wire will be solid color, and second wire will be of same color with white stripes.

Strip 1 or 4 inch of insulation off wire, insert wire to positive terminal screw on UTP baluns, then tighten screw. Repeat these steps with other wire. Now video connection is complete.

Each CAT-5 cable can support up to four cameras on single wire, if power is supplied locally. Separate the remaining three pairs of wires. Combine solid wires together, and combine striped wires together.

These wires will be used for power. reason pairs are combined is to reduce voltage drop for long runs. Strip 1 or 2 inch of insulation off each wire and use pliers to twist them together.

Repeat these steps for solid wires. Connect power socket to power socket on camera. striped wires are used for positive terminal screw.

Insert them in hole under screw, then tighten it until snug. Insert solid-colored wires into hole under negative terminal screw and tighten screw.
