The plug in the bathroom sink is probably one of the things that are not in your mind until there is a problem, and then it’s really on your mind. operating the stopper mechanism in most basins is a very simple device, with very few moving parts. Normally, this makes the process fairly simple task to locate problem. Repairs can be a little more difficult.

Where rods intersect there will be metal clip or bracket which holds two rods together. Check this intersection point to be certain both rods are in bracket and bracket is tight and secure. At times bracket can become loose and will not allow lever to operate correctly.

If rods are out of bracket, put them back into place, tighten bracket and test stopper activation lever. Check horizontal rod to see if it is bent or appears to be in bind of any type. Occasionally rods will become slightly misaligned, and when pressure is applied to open stopper force can bend rod, causing it to be in wrong position to operate stopper.

If rod appears bent, loosen bracket and slide horizontal rod out of bracket. Using pliers, grip rod as close to drain pipe as possible and hold it firmly in place. Very carefully use your free hand to bend rod back straight.

Normally rod is small enough in diameter to allow you to bend it rather easily. Once rod is straight, re-connect horizontal rod, tighten bracket and test stopper. Remove stopper from sink.

With most models this is done by turning stopper slightly, then pulling it up. Check stopper for any obvious damage or defects. Especially check lower portion of stopper, which is much smaller and easier to break or damage. If stopper is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Use flashlight to check drain. Look for any objects or debris which may have entered drain and are blocking stopper mechanism. In bathroom sinks it is not uncommon to have great deal of hair in drains.

This could cause buildup on mechanism and limit its ability to function properly. Clean any debris or blockage out of sink and replace stopper.
