For majority of homes there is knob on each supply pipe under sink that you would turn off. In some cases, if there are no turn-off valves under sink, then you will need to turn off water to house. Unscrew two connection caps on P-trap pipe that connects bathroom sink drain to drain pipe in wall.

If caps will not turn easily, then use adjustable plumber’s wrench to move them. Place bucket directly under P-trap so that when you remove trap it will empty directly into bucket. Remove P-trap by pulling short end down first and allowing it to empty into bucket.

Once short end is emptying into bucket, then pull other end of P-trap off of wall pipe. Search bucket for missing item.
