Recharge Air Conditioning with Freon in Ford Explorer

Air conditioning recharge yourself in your Ford Explorer is possible if your Intrepid is compatible with R134. Most models manufactured in 1995 or before use R12 refrigerant. It is possible to retrofit model using R12 to accept R134.

It has blue or black cap and may be marked L or LOW. Remove cap and put it in safe place. You will need to replace it once recharge is complete.

Look at type of connector on Low Pressure Side valve. If valve is screw on valve, your SUV accepts R12. If valve is quick connect, your SUV accepts R134.

Turn on engine. Your air conditioner will have to be on coldest setting. You also need to have it blowing as hard as possible.

This allows you to get valid pressure reading. Check air conditioning system pressure with appropriate pressure gauge. Attach refill hose to LPS connector.

Turn valve on refill hose slowly to allow refrigerant to enter air conditioning system. Pay attention to way you hold can. Most kits will have you hold can upright when you recharge air conditioning system.

Close valve on refill hose and remove it from Low Pressure Side connector port. Make sure that you replace cap on Low Pressure Side connector when you are finished recharging your air conditioner.
