Properly Wire Central Air Conditioner Thermostat

Wiring central / C is very easy, once you say how. Place switch controller or central air oven. Although voltage is only 24 volts AC, it is always better to work with power off.

Start by removing old thermostat, pulling cover and then unscrew sub base and remove thermostat wires, then remove thermostat base by removing fixing screws to wall. Now place new thermostat against wall and run cables through middle opening of new thermostat. Set thermostat to wall with screws provided with new thermostat, use spirit level to make sure thermostat is level.

Now attach sub-base to thermostats base, this is done by placing sub_base over mounted base and finding small screws attached too sub-base, there are usually three screws. Now it is time to attach wires to sub-base. On sub-base you will see letters r, may have RC and RH w, g, y, and maybe bl, bk, or, w1, w2, y1, y2.

You will not need later unless you are dealing with heat pump, if your central A/C is strait heat/cool A/C you only need first four. Take red wire and strip off about 1.4 inch of wire insulation, back off screw on thermostat that is labeled R or RC. make sure there is jumper wire between RV and RH if your thermostat has these letters, if so then wrap wire around screw in clock wise motion around R or RC screw.

Now screw head of screw down firmly making sure bare end of wire is not touching any other post. If there is no jumper from RC and RH, then you must create jumper wire, this can be dun by attaching red wire first to RC then stripping away bit of red wire and placing it under RH screw and tightening it down. Now take Yellow wire if you do not have yellow wire, that’s ok, some thermostat wire uses blue wire instead of Yellow, just use blue wire and strip end like you did for red wire and wrap it clockwise around Y screw and tighten down, Do same to white wire to W screw and Green wire to G screw.

Now place cover over thermostat and turn breaker on. Your thermostat should now control you central A/C.
