Make Solar Cell Out of Household Materials

A solar cell is device that converts light from the sun into electrical energy. commercial solar cell made of silicon produced and is very efficient, but also expensive. You can make inefficient solar cell at home showing photoelectric effect with relatively inexpensive materials.

This project requires some common household items and some specific purchases. Cut two sheets of copper about large size of the burner on the stove. Wash Copper sheets thoroughly with soap and water to remove any oil.

Sand copper sheets to remove any copper sulfides or other corrosion. Heat one copper sheet on largest burner at highest heat setting. Allow sheet to turn completely black and continue heating it for another half-hour to build thick coat of cupric oxide.

Turn off burner and allow sheet to cool for about 20 minutes by leaving it on burner. Remove most of cupric oxide by scrubbing gently, but don’t remove red layer. Cut off top of plastic bottle and bend both sheets of copper carefully so that they fit inside bottle without touching each other.

cupric-oxide layer should be facing away from other copper sheet. Attach one alligator clip lead to each copper sheet. Connect positive terminal of ammeter to clean copper sheet and negative terminal to copper sheet with cupric-oxide layer.

Stir 2 tbsp. of salt into half-gallon of hot tap water until salt is dissolved. Pour salt water into bottle without getting clips wet and leave about inch of plates above water. Place your solar cell in sunlight and watch current reading on ammeter increase.
