You can make your own safe and highly effective homemade rust stain with a standard household items. Pour ½ cup lemon juice in plastic spray bottle. Spray to saturate enough liquid to completely rust stain.

Allow garment to set for 30 minutes, and then launder as usual. Dampen rust stain with hot water if Step 1 doesn’t do job. Rub generous amount of Cream of Tartar into stain and let garment set for 20 to 30 minutes.

Launder in hot soapy water. If stain persists, proceed to Step 3. Pour quart of hot water into large pot.

Add 8 tablespoons of Cream of Tartar and stir well. Immerse rust-stained garment in cleaning solution and bring it to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Launder garment as usual. Dampen rust stain with lemon juice. Combine equal parts Cream of Tartar and salt in small bowl.

Add few drops of lemon juice and stir to form thick paste. Apply paste to rust stain and set garment out in sun until damp spot has dried. stain should be gone.

If it isn’t, repeat this step.
