Make Easy Homemade Solar Cell Light Bulb for Science Fair

A solar cell converts light into electricity. When light shines on the photocell, it produces tiny amount voltage. Voltage produced by single solar cell is very small, about 1 to 2 volts.

This is too small to drive the load, therefore, the number of solar cells are connected in series to produce a higher voltage. Solar panel, the number of solar cells is can be used to drive the load as light bulb. It is quite easy to make solar cell powered light bulb for the science fair.

Strip about 1 inch of insulation from each end of 1-foot long, red insulated wire and 1-foot long, black. This can be done with wire stripper, or light candle, hold end of wire in flame for few seconds, take it out and pull off insulation piece using pliers. Don’t touch wire end with bare hands immediately because it will be fairly hot.

Identify 3 V, 100 mA solar panel’s positive and negative terminals. You should see two wires extending from solar panel. In most cases, positive wire is red and negative wire is black, but colors may vary.

Check solar panel markings to identify correct polarity. negative polarity is ground. Strip 1 inch of insulation from each of solar panel’s two wires.

Use method you used previously. Connect solar panel’s positive terminal wire to any one of two wires of 100-Ohm, 1 or 4-watt resistor. This can be done by holding both wires side by side and then twisting them together with fingers or pliers.

Connect other end of resistor with 1-foot long, red wire. Do this by placing their ends side by side and twisting them together with fingers or pliers.
