Know If Your Air Conditioner Is Working

The right to schedule pre-season air conditioning maintenance time is late spring, when warm summer weather approaches. Maintenance includes cleaning drip pan under unit in attic, tube flush drain to outside of house, cleaning evaporator coils and debris from evaporator unit and condenser is located outdoors, and finally, after few steps to see that your air conditioner is working properly. Turn on air conditioning at start of warm sunny day.

Set thermostat to 65 degrees and check inside reading ambient air temperature on thermostat. Place thermometer against blowing into air conditioning vents. Wait 15 minutes.

Know If Your Air Conditioner Is Working

Compare temperature being emitted by air conditioner against ambient air temperature reading. difference should be approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit. If this isn’t case and ambient temperature has gone up, call your HVAC contractor.

Remove inspection cover from base of unit mounted in attic with screwdriver. If drain pan is full and not draining properly, it may cause ice to form. Check to see if there is ice on cold coil leading to drain pan.

If so, turn air conditioner off and wait for ice to melt. Clean out drain pan and clear blockage. Go outside and locate drain hose coming out side of house somewhere near outside condenser unit.

Wrap rag around outside of pipe to act as gasket. Place wet-or-dry shop vacuum hose over end. Turn vacuum on and suck out debris blocking pipe.

Step indoors and turn air conditioner back on. Wait 15 minutes and recheck temperature difference between incoming air and ambient room temperature. If problem persists, but room seems to have cooled down somewhat, step outside.

If outside air is noticeably warmer, you may need to replace faulty thermostat.
