Hide Air Conditioner

If you live in old house or apartment building, your home can not have central air conditioning. Instead, it is possible that wall unit air conditioner installed under window. While these devices can be very effective at cooling your home during hot and humid summer months they tend to be rough objects, industrial look that can be unpleasant to look quite at home.

Luckily, there is no easy way to hide air conditioning unit. Measure width and depth of your air conditioner against wall and record these measurements. Go to hardware store or lumberyard to buy strips and two 2-for-1/2 inch lumber cut to be 1 longer than width of your air conditioner inch.

Purchase another two strips cut to be 1 inch longer than depth of air conditioner. Sand each piece of wood carefully with 100-grit sandpaper. Dust them off with tack cloth when finished.

Position pieces of wood together so they make frame that will fit around front of your air conditioner. Nail pieces together neatly at each corner. Apply coat of oil-based primer.

Once primer has dried, apply two coats of paint, allowing paint to dry between coats. Cut piece of mesh or lace fabric that is 1 inch longer and 1 inch wider than length and width of your air conditioner dimensions. Staple gun fabric to inner portion of frame, inserting staple every 3 inches or so, creating 1/2-inch hem on inner side of frame.

Place frame over air conditioner to check fit. Remove it. Make mark with pencil by top right and left corners of air conditioner.

Nail 2-inch nail with hammer at each pencil marking. Hang frame on nails.
