Fix Blown Fuse in Air Conditioner

As small as it is, blown fuse will stop all cooling process. Replace fuse quickly and safely and improve performance of your air conditioner. Turn off air conditioner and disconnect electrical outlet.

Shut off your air conditioner at circuit breaker. disconnect switch is usually near outside casing. Some models have it on roof or side of house.

Turn off thermostat. Locate disconnect switch and open door. Locate two cartridge fuses with wires connected to terminals above and below it.

Using voltage tester, attach one probe to top terminal and other probe to ground terminal on disconnect switch. Check voltage tester’s readings. Probe bottom wires if you do not get reading.

If you are still unable to get reading, you have blown fuse. Pull out cartridge fuses with your fuse puller. You should see amperage listed on fuse.

It is usually 30-45amp depending on model. Check if unit requires standard, fast or delay-rated fuses. Refer to your air conditioner’s documentation if you are unsure.

Take damaged fuse cartridge to retail, hardware or appliance stores to purchase right replacement fuse. Install new fuse using fuse puller after you purchase it. Make sure to secure it properly into clamps.

Close door and turn circuit breaker back on.
