Find Leak on Air Conditioning System

Air conditioning is integral part of indoor air quality of homes and businesses today. Air conditioning systems cold your home, car and business by mixing compressed refrigerant and oil in circulation. If performance of air conditioning system is failing, system may be leaking coolant that needs repair.

Use flashlight to inspect available parts of air conditioning system. Look for stains of oil, oily sheen or other indication of oil leakage. Use any visible oil as reference point for subsequent leak detection.

Turn on air conditioning system if it’s already not running. Apply soapy water to system connections and anywhere you see visible oil. You have found your leak if bubbles appear.

Mark leak point with crayon or visible mark. Have unit serviced. If no leaks are found, use electronic leak detector designed for gas in your air conditioning system.

Calibrate unit away from air conditioning unit by setting gain so you get little or no signal from detector. Slowly pass detector head over air conditioning system connections and possible leak points. You will hear beeping or see visual signal if leak is detected.

Have unit serviced. If no leaks have been found, add ultraviolet dye to system. Add dye on low pressure side using refrigerant/oil charge supplied with it.

dye will circulate with oil phase in running system. Shine ultraviolet light on system connections and look for glowing dye.
