Many utilities will allow you to run existing power meter backward, which means meter will slow down as some of your power needs are covered by solar panels. If solar system is generating more power than is needed, extra power will flow into grid through existing connection and make existing power meter run in reverse. No additional metering or additional hook-up is required for this arrangement and utility is crediting you for power you generate at same amount as it charges you for power used.
Some utilities will pay for power generated at different rate than rate they charge for power used. In this case, separate power meter has to be installed to measure only power generated by solar panels and sent into grid. Install this power meter between automatic disconnect switch and breaker.
Wire two 220V AC terminals from disconnect switch to two input terminals of power meter. Wire power meter output terminals to circuit breaker.While this is extra expense, rate paid for solar power is often higher than amount you pay for grid power so there may be long-term advantage.
