Create Shalimar From Essential Oils

Invented by Jacques Guerlain in 1921, Shalimar attracts countless women with their musky aroma and subtle layers. Often described as having hints of vanilla with floral notes, Shalimar is also expensive, outperforming markets in more than $ 200 for one ounce bottle 3 or 4 from 2010. Do not worry, though.

With little experimentation and little patience, you can replicate almost exactly Shalimar fragrance. Pour 2 cups of distilled water and 2 tbsp. vodka or other grain alcohol in small glass measure. Shake gently to mix two.

The water holds fragrance while vodka preserves mixture and prevents algae and mold. Add about 2 drops of each of your essential oils to measuring cup. Gently mix them in with wooden Popsicle stick.

Lean down and breathe in scent from your mixture. Take breath of unscented air and sniff your Shalimar sample card. Compare two scents to determine which essential oils you need more of.

If Shalimar smells sweeter and deeper than your mix, add more vanilla or rose oil. If it smells muskier, add little more patchouli or bergamot. Sniff card and then each of your oils to determine which ones dominate scent.

Add only 1 or 2 drops of each essential oil at time. More than that and you risk ruining your mix and needing to start over. You can always add, but can’t take back out.

Once your mixture is as close to smelling like your card as possible, pour mixture carefully into glass spray bottle. Screw cap on tightly and store perfume in cool, dark area.
