Calculate Your Bathroom Tile Needs

Before buying tiles for your bathroom, or even the determination of its final tile design, you will have to calculate their needs tiles. You can install tiles on the walls and floor and shower walls, floor and ceiling. Because each of these areas may contain different tiles, heights, edges or patterns, measure and calculate each separate space.

This will help ensure there are no areas or specialty tiles such as rounded edge pieces, are overlooked. Measure the height on the wall where you want tiles to the end. Measure each wall at this height and width in inches.

Multiply these figures to get total number of square inches required for each wall. Divide this number by 144 to get total amount of square footage for each wall. Add 5 percent to this figure for waste.

Measure width of each wall in inches and divide by 12 to get number of linear edge tiles needed, if tiles do not go all way to ceiling. Use this measurement for border tiles, if desired. Add 1 additional foot to this number for breakage and waste.

Measure each shower wall separately in inches. Multiply height and width and divide by 144. Add 5 percent to this figure for waste.

Measure height of any exposed edges at sides of shower and divide by 12 to get number of feet of edge tiles needed to finish shower stall. Measure shower floor’s width and depth in inches. Multiply these numbers and divide by 144 to get square footage of shower floor.

Add 1 square foot for waste. Measure shower ceiling same way, if desired. Take measurement across opening of ceiling and divide by 12 to get linear footage of edge tiles to finish front of ceiling.

Break bathroom floor into square or rectangular sections. Measure length and width of each section, multiply, then divide by 144. Add sections together and add 5 percent for waste for basic floor pattern and 20 percent for waste for diagonal or intricate floor pattern.
